Nestled within a conservation area within a small Cheshire village. A traditional stone cottage meticulously maintained by its current owners needed some maintenance. Some of the original timber windows and doors were in a bad state becoming draughty, combined with the single glazing this was causing areas of the home to feel cold making them difficult to heat.
Dating back to the 18th century the property is made from stone, over the years multiple extensions have been added to increase the size of the home. The windows throughout the new additions are much newer and therefore in much better condition. The original rear façade of the building being south-facing has taken a lot of sun damage over the years leading to the need to replace the remaining windows and doors within this part of the building.
The main challenge with a building like this is to replace the windows without affecting the overall look and charm of the building, maintaining its heritage for many years to come. Featured yearly in the local garden exhibition it is of great importance to the village residents and the local conservation officers that the historical features of the building are protected. Material choice, window design, and a delicate installation team were all considerations when replacing the windows and doors.
We supplied and installed several timber windows and a timber door. All are handcrafted at our workshop and finished in a multi-stage paint process to ensure a long-lasting finish. The windows and doors were supplied with double glazing which is the main change over the original windows and doors and was important to the homeowner to achieve an improved energy rating. Astragal bars were fitted in the same design as the original windows to match the rest of the property and maintain its originality.
The installation of the new windows and doors has improved the property both visually and thermally. The fresh new frames are light and bright both internally and externally and are a perfect match to the existing units. The thicker frames and double glazing combine to make the property feel warmer. Enhanced locking system on both the windows and doors makes the home feel more secure.
