Glazing Options

All Rationel windows are fitted with highly energy efficient glazing, with a warm edge spacer fitted as standard to help reduce cold bridging. Environmentally friendly argon gas is filled between the glass panes to reduce heat loss and a think transparent metal film is applied to the internal pane to help prevent heat from escaping out of your room.

Available in a wide range of options including obscured, acoustic coloured, enhanced security and much more, find out more below.

OBSCURE

Rationel OBSCURE is designed to restrict the view into the private areas of your home, perfect for bathrooms. The obscure glazing is placed on the inside of all glazing panels ensuring they are easy to clean.

Acoustic

External noise can play a large factor on the quality of your daily life, Rationel sound control glass can help to keep the noise out by reducing sound transfer from outside by over 10db compared to a standard double glazed window.

Keep noise out

Keep noise out

Sound is measured in decibels (dB) with zero decibels (0db) being the faintest sound detected by ‘normal’ hearing. Sound measured at 120-130db can cause pain and potential hearing damage.

How a noise reducing window works

How a noise reducing window works

The level of acoustic insulation depends on the number of glass panes used in the window, the thickness of each glass pane, the combination of panes and the distance between them.

Frame is as important as glass

Frame is as important as glass

While glass is a good sound insulator it’s not enough on its own – the entire frame also contributes to noise reduction, with its impact dependent on factors such as the number of opening units, window size and joint construction.

Solar

Rationel SOLAR glass helps prevent overheating as a result of sunlight falling directly onto a window. It’s often installed in office buildings which feature large glazed facades, but is also ideal for any south or west-facing façade in a family home. Rationel SOLAR Green and Grey feature tinted glass which reduces the amount of light and heat coming into a building.

Multi-functional glass

Multi-functional glass

By minimising the impact of direct sun Rationel SOLAR glass delivers a range of benefits including preventing glare, helps to control indoor temperature and helps to improve energy bills.

Alternative sun protection

Alternative sun protection

If only occasional sun protection is required, alternative strategies include: Shutters, Awnings, Overhanging eaves or roofs, Strategic garden planting and Curtains or other shading solutions

External or internal shading?

External or internal shading?

If you opt for internal shading solutions, such as curtains, remember that the sun’s rays will still penetrate through the window and heat the room before they are reflected, which is why external shading is a more effective way to reduce the sun’s impact.

SECURE

Most burglars enter the home through an easily accessible window or patio door, which underlines the importance of window security. Rationel SECURE laminated safety glass is designed to resist forced entry and can therefore deter a thief from attempting to break into your home.

Laminated glass to deter break-ins

Laminated glass to deter break-ins

While laminated glass is no guarantee against forced entry, it can provide a sufficient deterrent to make a thief give up in their attempt to break in.

Ideal locations for Rationel SECURE

Ideal locations for Rationel SECURE

As broken windows attract unwelcome attention, thieves prefer windows which are hidden from view from neighbours or passers-by. Laminated glass is particularly useful in such locations as a thief has to work hard to break in.

Minimise the risk of injury

Minimise the risk of injury

As well as reducing the risk of forced entry, laminated glass also improves window safety by ensuring broken shards of glass are held in place by the interlayer and cannot cause personal injury.

Sun protection

The level of sun protection provided by a window is determined by the amount of sunlight and the amount of the sun’s heat that are allowed to pass through the glazing. Sunlight is known as the Light Transmittance (LT-value) and the heat is known as the Solar Heat Gain (g-value). Other factors that may be considered are Energy Absorption (EA) and Energy Reflection (ER), these are the percentages of solar radiation absorbed by the glazing and the solar radiation reflected by the glazing.

  • Sun SKN176:Approximately 64% transmittance*, 35% solar gain**
  •
  • Sun SKN165:Approximately 55% transmittance*, 31% solar gain**
  •
  • Sun SKN154:Approximately 47% transmittance*, 26% solar gain**

*= LT-value    **= g-value

In comparison, a standard non-solar glazing would offer in the region of 74% light transmittance and 53% solar gain.
